Daily Walkaround Check
Defect report, checklist, walkaround – call it what you like, but this simple daily task can be your first line of defence in protecting your operator’s licence.
Too often, the walkaround check is brushed off as a quick glance around the vehicle or worse, “completed” from the driver’s seat. In reality, it’s a vital opportunity to make sure your vehicle is safe, roadworthy, and compliant.
Let’s say a driver rushes through the checklist, ticks every box, and drives off. Later that day, they’re stopped at a roadside check and a bald tyre is found.
The result? A fine and penalty points for the driver. It’s their responsibility, and they’ll be prosecuted. But it doesn’t stop there. A bald tyre is classed as an S-marked prohibition, the most serious type, meaning the DVSA believes there’s been a significant failure in your maintenance procedures. That one defect can open the door to a full investigation.
Inspectors will review your PMIs, checking they’re on time, properly completed, and free from driver-detectable issues. If they find repairs for faults that should’ve been spotted on a daily check such as a blown bulb, cut tyre, or cracked windscreen — it raises red flags.
And while they’re at it, expect them to look at your tachograph records too.
If they build a case that you’re not meeting your operator licence obligations, it’s likely to end up with the Traffic Commissioner and a public inquiry is almost guaranteed.
All that, just because a driver didn’t fancy stepping out of the cab on a cold winter morning. The outcome? Points on a licence (or worse, a lost one), legal costs in the thousands, and potential loss of your operator’s licence.
This isn’t scare tactics, it’s reality. Read a few recent Traffic Commissioner decisions and you’ll see how often licences are revoked due to sloppy walkaround checks.
There are plenty of app-based defect reporting systems that make the process simple and efficient. We work with several clients who use them successfully so if you’d like some advice, just get in touch.
